Custom Crowns

When a tooth is significantly damaged, oftentimes, the most appropriate restoration is a crown that encases the entire tooth above its roots. Prior to placing a crown, a root canal procedure may be required to clear infection from the tooth’s roots and pack them with sealing material.

Dr. Hagood designs custom-fabricated and shaded crowns that match the surrounding teeth. Crowns can be made of all porcelain, porcelain fused to titanium, porcelain fused to zirconium, all zirconium, and gold. Multiple considerations go into which type Dr. Hagood recommends (for example, visibility when you smile, the function the tooth performs, and cost). You can expect your crown(s) to fit perfectly, function harmoniously in your bite, blend naturally with your smile, and last a long time. For most lifelike crowns, Dr. Hagood takes pride in making exquisite all-ceramic porcelain crowns.

All-Ceramic Porcelain Crowns

Dr. Hagood has extensive training and experience in all-ceramic crowns and has successfully placed hundreds of these restorations since 1991. Like our porcelain veneers, these restorations are very durable, naturally beautiful, and backed by our world-class warranty. Dr. Hagood will evaluate your oral health and smile to determine whether veneers, crowns, or a combination of both will be best for you. Before accepting treatment, you will be intimately involved in developing the plan of treatment, fully informed about what to expect, and understand WHY certain procedures are better than others for your special mouth.

Note: Dr. Hagood provides only the best materials and methods for lifelike, natural appearance. Your custom porcelain crowns will color match and perfectly blend with your smile.

Here are the before and after images of two dental cases using porcelain restorations. For each of these smiles, a combination of crowns and veneers was used to achieve the most conservative and beautiful dentistry.

When Might a Different Type of Crown Be Used?

For a back tooth that doesn’t show when you smile, talk and laugh, a porcelain fused to metal crown, a zirconia crown, or a gold crown might be used instead of an all-porcelain crown. The considerations that enter in the decision are cost of materials and the longevity of the various types. For the longest lasting crowns on posterior teeth, Dr. Hagood can place custom-cast gold crowns.

If You Need a Crown, You Will Be in Excellent Hands

Dr. Hagood is one of the most credentialed dentists in Florida, with extensive experience and advanced training in restorative and cosmetic dentistry. Your tooth will be prepped by removing the enamel to make room for the crown. This procedure is done using local anesthetic. After the enamel has been removed, impressions will be made of your mouth. Dr. Hagood’s dental lab will create your crown according to his specifications and the impressions. This process usually takes about two weeks. During this time, you will wear a temporary acrylic crown that Dr. Hagood makes at the time of the preparation appointment in his own in-house lab. The temporary crown will resemble the durable one the lab is making, fill in your smile, allow you to eat normally, and test your occlusal comfort. When your custom crown arrives from the lab, you will come in for the next appointment. Dr. Hagood will remove your temporary crown, test the fit of your new crown, make tiny adjustments if needed, and cement the crown in place.
